Lake Park Stopped Taking Shelter Bookings Until January. Here's What Runs There Through Fall.

On Friday night, Oct. 30, registration at the Tampa BMX Raceway track inside Lake Park opens at 6 p.m. and closes at 7:30, and racing starts at 8. Less than two days later, on Sunday, Nov. 1, the same track hosts a USA BMX practice-and-racing event with a 1 p.m. start. Hillsborough County's 11th annual Hiking Spree also opens that day.

So this weekend is one of the busiest Lake Park will have all fall, even though one corner of the park is fenced off. The playground upgrade has stopped the reservation side of the park, meaning birthday parties, group cookouts and booked shelters. It hasn't touched the parts that never needed a reservation, and those parts carry the park from now until January.

What the playground work actually paused

Hillsborough County's Lake Park page says the park is not accepting shelter reservations while the playground is upgraded, and that the department has stopped all bookings, effective immediately. The county gives this reason:

"Heavy construction and the presence of debris in the area pose a safety hazard."

The county expects to reopen shelter reservations in January 2027, but says the exact date is not yet known. The county hasn't announced a scope, a budget or a finish date for the playground itself. For now, the county is treating this as a pause on bookings, not a closure of the park.

That matters because the playground and the shelters are the parts of Lake Park people plan weeks ahead, the Saturday party with a reserved table and a cooler. Everything else runs on a posted race schedule, on daylight, or on whenever you want to get a canoe on the water.

The park that doesn't need a reservation

Lake Park is a large park that the county describes as surrounded by suburban homes. It has five lakes, cypress swamps, pine flatwoods and hardwood hammocks. All of the following are listed on the county's page, and none of them is part of the playground notice:

  • Marked wooded trails for hikers, cross-country runners, mountain bikers and riders on horseback
  • A fitness trail with workout stations along the route
  • An archery range and two horse arenas
  • Fishing and boating on the lakes, with canoe and kayak rentals at the park's entry station
  • A track for Tampa BMX and radio-controlled car racing

There's also a second way in that many park visitors may not know about. The county lists the Northdale Lake Park Trail access at 5100 Northdale Blvd., inside the Northdale subdivision. Northdale residents can walk onto the trail network from that neighborhood side without passing the playground area.

Friday nights belong to the BMX track

The BMX track has the clearest calendar in the park. Tampa BMX Raceway, Inc. posts its schedule through USA BMX's track events page. Its late-October schedule set a steady weekly pattern, with Friday practice and racing on Oct. 23, Sunday racing on Oct. 25 with a 1 p.m. start, and Wednesday practice on Oct. 28 with registration from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Two dates are still ahead this week:

Day Date Registration Racing
Friday Oct. 30 6 to 7:30 p.m. 8 p.m.
Sunday Nov. 1 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. 1 p.m.

After Nov. 1, the track's own listings are the place to check, so look at USA BMX's page for the track before you head over on a December Friday.

The Friday evening slot also fits next to something else on Oct. 30. That morning, the Lutz Branch Library holds Baby Time from 10:15 to 10:35 a.m. and Family Story Time from 11 to 11:30 a.m., both in its Community Room. With the playground unavailable, that gives a family with young kids an indoor morning and a trackside evening on the same day.

November adds a trail calendar on top

The Hiking Spree is what turns Lake Park's quiet season into a calendar. Hillsborough County's Hiking Spree page says the 11th annual event runs Nov. 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027. That's five months, and it covers the whole stretch when shelters can't be booked plus about two more months.

The county hasn't published this year's trail locations, maps or reward details yet. Whether Lake Park's marked trails make the list is still open. The timing is clear, though. The event starts the same Sunday the BMX track races, and it runs right through January, when the county expects shelter reservations to come back.

For anyone who uses Lake Park mostly for its trails, November through March is the stretch when the county's own programming points people toward walking. The trails at Lake Park don't depend on the playground, and the Northdale access point is a good way to start on a weekday when you'd rather skip the main entrance.

Where the gatherings go in the meantime

Lake Park's shelters will be off the books until January, but Lutz still has group gatherings on the calendar, at indoor venues nearby.

On Saturday, Nov. 28, the Trinity Crafters Market holds an indoor holiday craft fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa Suncoast Parkway, 2155 Northpointe Parkway in Lutz. The event listing on Eventbrite has the details.

A week later, on Dec. 5 and 6, the GFWC Lutz-Land O'Lakes Woman's Club holds its Lutz Arts and Crafts Show at Keystone Prep High School, 18105 Gunn Hwy. in Odessa. The club's show page has the information. It keeps the Lutz name even though the venue has an Odessa address.

Put together, the season looks like this:

  1. Fri., Oct. 30: Library story times in the morning, BMX racing at 8 p.m.
  2. Sun., Nov. 1: The USA BMX event at Lake Park at 1 p.m. and the start of the Hiking Spree
  3. Sat., Nov. 28: Trinity Crafters Market holiday fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  4. Sat. and Sun., Dec. 5 and 6: Lutz Arts and Crafts Show at Keystone Prep High School
  5. January 2027: The county expects Lake Park shelter reservations to reopen, with the exact date not yet set

Until January, the trails, the lakes, the canoe rentals at the entry station and the Friday night BMX races at Lake Park all run on their own schedules.
